What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

From my previous research on institutions I have found two contenders who would publish my magazine. These are Bauer Media, a publisher with more than 80 media brands including the popular music magazines Kerrang! and Q and Future Publishing who publish the popular magazines Metal Hammer and Future Music as well as many others. I chose these two institutions because they both publish magazines similar to mine in terms of the same target audience and music genres. Kerrang! is a very similar magazine to my own which is why I feel it would be a better choice to choose Future Publishing to publish my media product. I believe this would be best because this institution doesn’t publish a music magazine for fans of less extreme metal genres who are more likely to read my magazine rather than Metal Hammer, a magazine for those who are fans of the extreme genres of metal (black/death/core metal).
I am keen to use Future Publishing because of their more adult approach to the content of their magazines, in particular Metal Hammer, in terms of language and register and images. From flicking through Metal Hammer magazine, I have found that the language and register has been wrote deliberately to appeal very specifically to the magazine’s audience. It’s almost as if the articles are impersonating a keen reader of the magazine and therefore gives a heavily bias perspective on bands and music news. As I previously mentioned, this institution publishes more mature content that what would be found in Kerrang! magazine and therefore is aware of the same target audience that my media product is aiming at.

Here is an example of the more
mature imagery in Metal Hammer,
a magazine published by
Future Publishing.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Photoshop was a dominant technology that I used throughout the course. I used it from the very start to create my preliminary tasks and continued to use it up to completing my magazine and starting my evaluation. I used many elements of the Photoshop software to create my magazine pages such as the various filters available to enhance and manipulate images as well as adding, blending and resizing layers. I have shown in the video provided that I am capable of using Photoshop effectively and can show a high degree of understanding. For example, I have provided evidence that I can crop an image that I have uploaded to Photoshop to a suitable size to use for my music magazine’s front cover. I have also included screen capture footage of me creating text and changing the size and colour of the font efficiently and showing understanding of doing so.
I found using Photoshop an easy task as I had plenty of previous experience and knowledge so I found creating my preliminary task magazine pages as well as my music magazine pages no problem at all. I still feel that I have developed by experience of using this piece of software and feel more capable using many layers at once to create a piece of work such as my magazine.

I used the Internet throughout the creation of my coursework to aid me and provide information and resources for me to do so. For example, I used the popular blogging platform Blogger to store and present each stage of my development throughout the year and have used it from the first day to the last. I also made use of many other resources such as polldaddy.com, imgur.com and Google Images which have all provided me the necessary requirements to assist my work. I have provided a short video which highlights how I used each resource online to show that I was capable of doing so.
I found using each resource rather simple and straight forward to use and had no major issues throughout the period of my coursework. I did however have some minor complications with finding a suitable place to upload my target audience questionnaire as I needed a platform which was free and provided me with the necessary tools to share my questionnaire online without any complications.

Looking back on your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Front Cover v1.3

I have had to change my colour theme because I found that Clash Magazine uses the same colour theme for a number of their issues. This is a mistake I made which I should have realised a while ago when looking at various magazine front covers for my similar product research and inspiration.
